An entrepreneur at heart, Paul discovered his passion for helping others envision their financial future when he founded his first financial services firm while pursuing his MBA at Purdue University. In professional and personal endeavors that followed, Paul tapped that same entrepreneurial spirit – from managing advisor relationships at Schwab, to senior leadership roles at regional investment advisors, to raising over $300,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in memory of his son, David. Paul’s success is a direct result of his passion and ability to Frame Your PictureTM, which makes him a natural fit for the team at CornerCap Wealth Advisors, where he drives growth of firm assets, client relationships and external partnerships.

Why did you choose to join CornerCap?

With over three decades of financial services experience, I believe in the independent Registered Investment Advisor model of business for building, managing, and protecting wealth for clients. In my experience, the fiduciary obligation to act always in the client’s best interest is better achieved at smaller, independent firms. The commitment CornerCap exhibits to fiduciary duty and client service, coupled with the firm’s rich history of investment research and tailored client solutions, made the decision to join the firm a career highlight for me.

How do you encourage clients to frame their financial picture?

Every CornerCap client is unique. Each one brings a personal perspective on life, and we work with them to understand their needs and goals and to help them focus on framing their financial picture. For some, the picture is simple and the composition uncomplicated.  For others, the composition is abstract and difficult to fully translate.  However, with all clients it is important to remain mindful of an evolving picture and remain in ongoing communication to frame their vision.

If someone gave you a million dollars to start your own charity, what cause would you focus on?

As a St. Jude patient family, my philanthropic focus is to support families like ours who have experienced childhood cancer.  St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was essential in helping us spend as much time with our son as possible, all without the burden of administrative nightmares of insurance approvals or financial concerns.  Our family was blessed beyond belief during David’s battle, and we created Team David to honor his memory and pay-it-forward to other families who are facing the same battle.  Team David annually participates in the St. Jude Marathon Weekend of Races with friends and family from across the country as we convene in Memphis to participate in the road races. What was your first job, and how did it influence your ultimate career path?

When I was 12 years old, my father suggested that I mow my grandmother’s lawn…and so began my career as an entrepreneur.  My grandmother, a widower who raised five children during the Great Depression as a single mother, taught me to never cut corners in my work and to always think about how to keep expenses in check.  Later that same summer, I partnered with my best friend to work together on the yards we mowed, and we quickly learned that we were more productive together – plus we had more fun as a team.  The values learned during those summers as lawn care specialists live with me today – work smart not harder, slow and smooth is faster, and partner with people you enjoy spending time with.
